Hmmm....

I am having a very interesting day. I ran out of dishwasher detergent, the car's in the shop, Hazel's fussy for some indeterminate reason, the cap pooped on the floor in the back porch, the bank lost and then found Jason's deposited paycheck, and the snow is melting and creating major slushage outside.

A survey: without looking it up or looking at anyone else's answers, do you know what a shim is? More to follow once you all respond.

i don't...my guess would be a crudely fashioned prosthesis worn by a three-legged animal.

A piece of wood used to get a cabinet, door jamb, floor- just about anything, level. Usually about 18-24" long, tapered,so you can get as much leveling as you need by pushing it farther under or behind the thing you are shimming.
