Who knew, but moths are quite deaf. They are so deaf in fact that they will fly over an expanse of lawn, land on a blade of grass, and be unknowingly in the direct path of a vicious, never-satiated lawn mower. They sit there in a very calm manner, as the driver screams to them to get out of the way, and sacrifice themselves to the cause of a manicured Cynodon dactylon.
However, according to the A Moment of Science website, some moths do have ears to be able to hear the "approach of one of their greatest predators--moth-eating bats." (Cue scary music.) They use sonar to do this. I am no great expert in the mysteries of sonar, but wouldn't a giant (to a moth), vibrating machine emit some sort of sound waves that they could pick up? Or maybe moths are just stupid and don't consider the consequences of their actions.
This is my penance for killing three moths this evening while mowing the lawns. Next time they should listen for the mower and just get out the way.

sure, the first moth may have been a horrible unforseen tragedy, but the second and third...shameful outright genocide. MURDERER! MURDERER!!
