A small tour

Here's a little tour of Hazel's room! Her first room at the house in Colfax was mostly green, yellow, and orange. I even have a quilt top (something to finish) that I made for her that goes great with that color scheme. But when we moved into this apartment I wanted to do something a little more girly for her. I still need to hang up some prints and a wall hanging Jason's grandmother made for her. But the room is basically done, until baby #2 comes along and we move Hazel to a big girl bed.

When you walk into the room, next to Hazel's bed is a little cubby that we got at the Fall Jolly this year. We hung it at Hazel's height so she could hang things up and put her shoes away herself. So far this has just resulted in her being easily able to scatter her things around her room. My sister gave Hazel the little pilot print that's sitting on top. It's a smaller version of a print my brother gave my mom several years ago.

Hazel's crib, which we also got at the Fall Jolly. I got the pink striped sheets from Target in a pair with a bright pink polka dot (which matches the pinky red in the frames above her bed, quite by accident). The quilt my mom and I found at an antique store in Palouse. My mom finished it for Hazel's first birthday. The doll is also made by my mom and the little pink blanket was mine when I was a baby.
Hazel wanting to get in the fun and climb in her bed. I have some great Heather Ross fabric that I have started to make a bed skirt, but I still need to sew ribbons on to attach it under the bed. We have random baskets under the bed for sweater storage.

Above her bed are framed alphabet prints by Martha Stewart I purchased at Michael's. I love them and I might someday hang all 26 up using a clothesline or something similar. But right now we love spelling out her name and the bright red background. The banner goes around her entire room and is from her first birthday party.

Her dresser painted a wonderful goldenrod color with a bird tree that I made for the Dutch Girl Fabric table at the Fall Jolly. The dresser was used for bathroom storage at the house in Colfax. The birds I made right before Hazel was born and I never got around to finishing the mobile I had planned. I also have a few yo-yos in the branches and they all have saftey pins on them so I can just grab one to go on her Sunday outfit if a little embellishment is needed. (Sorry for the bad picture with the next building's water meters visible in the background.)

Just today I made a little reading spot for her. Jason had put her books in the storage container we got from some friends who were throwing them out. (That's us, we'll take your garbage!) I just put it on the floor along with a pillow from IKEA that I've had since college and Jason convinced me to save two years ago when I was on a purging spree. He was right to keep it since it goes with the colors we did in her room this time around.

Future project: this is my old dresser from a bed set I inherited from a cousin of my grandmother's. It used to be white and my mom painted it black a few years ago. My parents brought it out so I could switch out Hazel's old changing table with it over New Year's. (We need more storage with another tot on the way.) I want to paint it, but I'm not sure what color. Some people have said to leave it black, but I think it's too dark for the room. I have more yellow paint from the dresser, but since the room is small, I don't want the entire room to look yellow. I'm thinking either cream or a pale blue/turquoise. And definitely changing out the hardware I picked out about 14 years ago when I first used the dresser.

What a cute, creative room! She is one lucky girl! ;) Also, the babies I nanny have that same cloth book, they LOVE it. :D

Looks great, Liz- I vote for cream on the dresser- but you had better have Jason strip it first, I think it has exceeded the # of coats of paint that will stick! And what if #2 is a boy? Hope he doesn't mind the pinkish tones!

If #2 is a boy then we will do more of the red/yellow/blue colors and try to make it more manly.

Love the room Liz! For the record, the IKEA pillow is awesome, as is the nifty inherited dresser thingy. I officially would like to be Hazel's roommat?e. She doesn't snore, does she

hi liz...
it's lindsey, your twin-sep-@-birth friend.....just bringing that up b/c i noticed lots of similarities b/tw hazel's room & my boys' rooms: first item i bought for the nursery when i was preggers was an ikea lampshade that matches your pillow; riley has that whole m. stewart abc card collection up in his room right now; i am currently collecting fabs to make that bird mobile for an empty corner in our kitchen.....boy, you have good taste!! ;}

Patricia: I stuck some branches in a bowl with some styrofoam in it and then put rocks on top of that so it would stay put. The fabric wrapped around hides all that ugliness.

And the birds I made from a pattern I found last year: http://walrusrising.blogspot.com/2008/07/project_30.html

I do still want to finish the mobile, but Jason wants to do the actual hanging so that it's all balanced and everything. I think if I did it, it would look like Hazel made it.

And Lindsey - it is rather frightening sometimes how much we are alike. :) And now we're even more alike now that you can eat eggs! Whenever you visit we'll make eggs benedict!

I LOVE her room, especially the fabric banner and the bird tree. I would vote for blue (for contrast) or a white that matches the walls (so the room doesn't look crowded) for the dresser. But based on what you've done so far, I think anything would look great. :)

Very cute! I am sure I would have liked the green, yellow and orange room but you are right that this is more 'girl'. The alphabet prints are great idea, too. Love ya guys,

The room is darling. I can hardly wait to see it and that precious little girl in the crib next week.
