Well, the weekend is over and it was back to reality. But the weekend actually lasted a little longer than we had anticipated.
We had a great time visiting Anne and seeing "The Crucible" and hanging out with my parents. (My mom and dad just got back from Cambodia and were used to eating less, but my dad couldn't finish his dinner on Saturday. He was convinced that he was really sick because he used to be able to. But then he admitted that it probably was a good thing since restaurants always give you so much.)
Anyways...on Sunday we got to see Abe, sans Holly and Elliot because they were in Portland. We haven't seen Abe since the wedding so it was really nice to catch up with his training and visit.
Abe always has his eyes shut in pictures, just so you know.
So then Sunday night after church and eating lunch with everyone, Jason and I took off for Moscow. We checked the weather reports and it said it was snowing on the pass and chains were required, but that was it.
So we start driving at 4ish. We get up to the pass around 5. The kindly highway patrolman waves us through because we're all-wheel-drive.
Then the road just gets completely covered in snow. Neither one of us had ever seen that before. It was kind of a free for all since you couldn't see the lanes. It was more of a "I think this looks like a good path for me" type deal.
Then it just starts snowing heavier and the road gets more covered. Then we see a sign that says there was a snow slide and there would be a delay. Everyone keeps going. (Not that there was an option, you can't exactly turn around in the middle of a freeway.)
Then everyone stops. We halt as well and just sit there chatting. It's 5:30. For the next hour Jason and I just talk and then we realize we've been sitting there for an hour. But no one has come by. So we turn on the radio and discover that there has been a massive snow slide and they are working to clear the roads. So basically we sit there doing nothing at all for 3 hours. I was really starting to wonder what I was going to do for a bathroom. We heard on the radio that the pass wouldn't be open for another 12 hours or so. Great. So we get out the blanket we keep in the back and start to get ready to go to sleep.
But then, some people come walking past us that found out we were allowed to turn around a little bit up the road and go back down the west highway.
So we do that instead of sleeping out in the car all night.
I was a little disappointed to be honest. (But this picture was taken while we were waiting to find out what was going on.) I've never been stuck in the snow before and I've definitely never had to sleep in my car all night in the mountains. But we did get to go back down to Seattle and sleep in Anne's bed again. Thank you! But I did miss work on Monday and Jason missed his classes and the paper route.
Oh - to make the weekend all the more exciting, Jason and I dented our car up quite badly on Friday during the paper route. There was fresh snow everywhere and it was quite slippery. We have to go down this hill and it's a little steep. As soon as we started down, both of us could tell this would end badly. We hit a parked truck because we couldn't turn and now we're missing a front headlight and the hood is dented. Not so happy about that.
So my life is not boring. It's just exciting in very negative ways.
