There was once a meeting. The Wildlife and Game officials in Washington, D.C. are all sitting around a table discussing animal populations. The topic of the deer population is brought up. It is steadily rising and is starting to cause problems. There are simply too many deers. Some ideas are tossed around, yet the most simple solutions are thrown out early. This being a government operation, they must always opt for the most complicated answer.
So what was the solution they decided on?
Why give the deer birth control of course. And of course, it's not even tested birth control. It's experimental.
"We don't even know if it will stop them from reproducing, but heck, we'll try it anyways!"
I was just reading an article in this month's Smithsonian magazine and laughed out loud at the thought of the size of the job of catching, tagging, and medicating thousands of female deer. Could they have picked a more complex solution? I'm not a huge fan of hunting unless you make full use of the animal, but I think the easiest solution would be to expand the hunting season and licensing. But that's just me. Please - go and have fun running around in the woods with the does.
