Where is our society headed? Many ask this question when horrible things happen or there is a war going on. But I ask this question after reading today that scientists are almost finished with creating genetically-altered kittens: hypoallergenic kittens at that.
Here in our great state of California, scientists have created a new breed of cat that doesn't produce the protein secreted by cats' skin which causes humans to have an allergic reaction to cats. In 2007, fresh off the assembly line, they will be ready for purchase at $3,500 a pop. Care to reserve one now? Just lay down your $250 and your name will be on the list.
My question is this: with so many medical problems in the world today, could not these intelligent people be better utilized in another field? Why spend (probably) millions of dollars designing a pet when there are people suffering from other diseases that I would consider much more life-threatening than cat allergies?
The world is a delightfully odd place. Here's the story if you want to read it.
